Kathmandu, May 21

Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Kathmandu chapter submitted a memorandum to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar demanding guarantee of journalists’ security.

The FNJ submitted the memorandum demanding security for journalists after attacks on journalists, media houses and vehicles went up during the first day of agitation called by different organizations, mainly the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Struggle Committee.

Kathmandu chapter President of the FNJ, Govinda Chaulagain, submitted the memo after reading it.

The memo stated that it was a matter of serious concern to attack media persons, who make public aware and help build opinion, and to destroy vehicles of media houses.

Urging all concerned to correct their anti-democratic activities immediately, the FNJ demanded with the government to give special attention on journalists’ security and to create an environment for covering news unhindered.

The memo also demanded with the government for free treatment of the injured media persons and to provide compensation for their damaged vehicles within 24 hours.

On the occasion, mentioning the protests by different organizations and major political parties on the attack of journalists, Deputy Prime Minister Gachchhadar said that the government was committed to journalists’ security.

Saying no one should obstruct the works of covering and dissemination of news, he condemned the attack and misbehaviour meted out against the journalists.

President of the FNJ, Shiva Gaunle said that the government was not responsible for journalists’ security and demanded with it to create an environment in which the media persons could move freely to impart their duty of covering news.
